Having spent decades hiking, backpacking, walking trails and roads, cycling, and even running way back when (before spine surgery) in many varieties and brands of shoes, I’ve gotta say these are the all-around best ever that I’ve worn! They are light enough to wear mountain-biking or probably even trail-running (though I don’t run anymore), but also very sturdy and offer lots of support even though they are low-cut like running shoes. With a tendency to sprain ankles, I thought I’d need the ankle support of a higher cut, but it seems unnecessary now because of the stability these offer. The soles actually grip rocks, slippery muddy slopes, and slimy logs and for me nowadays, that extra confidence in my shoes is important. Also for me, they were perfectly comfortable right out of the box, and about a week later, I completed the somewhat grueling 7-hour/22k Tongariro Crossing (New Zealand) in fine form while wearing them (which means no jammed toenails for once). I also like the fact that my feet don’t overheat in these shoes, no matter how long I’ve been hiking/walking and no matter what the weather is. Though not actually waterproof, they handle moisture (mud, misty fog, wet foliage, puddles) well and dry fairly quickly (definitely overnight); in my case, having been soaking wet (I’d hosed off lots of mud), they dried to a custom foot shape gripping my feet. After hiking all day, I’ve even worn these out to (a nice) dinner without any askance looks, they are that good-looking. The fit was true to size, with a good amount of wiggle-room in the relatively wide (but not too wide) toe box.

I’d highly recommend these shoes to anyone looking for something light, sturdy, non-slip, stable, good-looking, and all-around excellent for multiple outdoor pursuits. These would be perfect for travelers wanting to pack just one pair of shoes suitable for lots of different activities.

This review is from: Oboz Women’s Sawtooth Low Hiking Boot (Apparel)

I wanted to love these shoes and their amazing traction, though found them to be hot and disappointingly, not waterproof. Since they didn’t live to see the wet rainy northwest, it doesn’t matter. After four months, all the support seemed to drop out of them. I have a foot pain that shows up when shoes are really shot and these are definitely shot. When I put them on I feel my feet sink to the floor. There’s nothing left of the sole of my shoes, though the outside treads looks fine. They were so light and wonderfully supportive at first and the so sorry truth is that I hardly gave them a proper beating. We had a lame summer, to say the least, and these shoes have gotten mostly light abuse. In comparison, my husband has a pair of Oboz he would wear absolutely everywhere- he loves them more than any other shoe he’s ever worn. If he goes broke and has to live under a bridge by the river, he will find a way to have his Oboz…..My model was a great disappointment. Back to my clunky Keens.

Comfortable but not durable at all!, September 1, 2011

This review is from: Oboz Women’s Sawtooth Low Hiking Boot (Apparel)

I bought these shoes to use for light/moderate hikes. They’re super comfortable, but they completely fell apart after just a couple months and fewer than 100 trail miles. The rubber covering on the toe delaminated. I contacted the company and they told me to use barge cement to repair the loose flap of rubber. I have to do this before every hike I go on. The toes of the shoes are so covered with glue, it’s ridiculous. My husband wears Oboz too, and hasn’t had any issues. Maybe I just got a bad pair?
